The Writing Life
Product Reviews

People have asked me about product reviews. There are so many new products coming out all of the time for writers it’s hard to know what to get. There is truly a lot of hype out there, but there are also some real treasures.

If you’re interested in KEYWORDSMITHING you really should check out WordTracker.com. I’m not an affiliate or associated with this site in any way (although I subscribe) so there is no vested interest. What WordTracker does is compile the most frequently used keywords over the past month. You can use it to find out how popular keywords are and you can also use the “keyword universe” feature to pull up related keywords. It’s weird, but some related keywords are things you would never think of.

For instance, I recently was researching iPod-related keywords and I was messing around with keywords along the lines of “how do I use my iPod?” or “Getting the most from my iPod” or “iPod use tips.” They were all pretty weak keywords (few hits). But keyword universe told me there were tons of hits for this keyword: “how does an iPod work?”

Drawback to WordTracker is that, as far as I can tell, it only compiles keyword stats from the U.S. and the United Kingdom. For most people this seems fine, but if you do a lot of business outside of the those markets, you won’t be getting the right information. There are arguments that it should be similar or that it is somehow still relevant, but that’s speculation.

WordTracker costs. It’s a good service and it should charge. It costs $59 a month but you can get a month free trial if you want. However, you’re limited to the free month’s subscription once per year. I wouldn’t necessarily jump on this service till you have some websites and even money sites, but it’s a good one. I don’t know too many online people who don’t use it.
